Unfortunately, the straw signs at a river junction were moved to the other side of the riverbank by some wild pigs. Wind blew the straw signs to the mountain slope. The Miao, thinking that the Dong had gone into the mountains, landed and tried to follow them.

In addition to serving as a public meetinghouse, dispute tribunal, and symbol of a clan’s surname, almost all aspects of Dong social life and cultural practice are centered in and around the drum tower. It is not only a place where villagers congregate for festivals and rituals and special meetings but also where Dong people often gather in the evenings to listen to the elders’ stories of their past and to practice their folk songs.

Sax A ltar The Sax altar is not always a visible formal structure in a Dong settlement. 8 It is a public place for only the Dong themselves, rather than for outsiders. It is also a place for special occasions rather than for daily activities. Even the most elaborate and visible Sax altar is just a simple roofed shelter. 6). A village may have more than one Sax temple. Seemingly they are randomly scattered within the settlement and often merge into the housing blocks without attracting visitors’ attention; only locals know where they are.
