Such generalisations of universal invariance of events are (with some sophisticated qualifications which need not concern us here) our scientific laws. Actualism thus is an event based on ontology of invariance. Empirically observed invariance is generalised, from the subset of events to all events, this being exhaustive of reality and thus the generalisation of invariance is the law of nature. Postmodernism not only anchors it critique, as we saw above, on the social constructedness of knowledge, but also on the simplification of both the natural and social world to these types of general laws.

They are ephemeral, since they exist over time rather than at a time. They have the form of a narrative, so they can usefully be thought of as texts of a kind. Why is the text metaphor a reasonable way of looking at social worlds? Well, a text is produced in accordance with semantic rules and narrative conventions; when we are living a narrative, a strip of life, we are realising certain rules and meanings. At this moment, we are living a conference narrative, given its finest postmodern treatment by David Lodge.

Causality is not Humean concomitance but agentive.
