Advanced turboexpander-type cryocoolers based on the Brayton thermodynamic cycle are being developed by NASA for future long duration missions. Important advantages offered by the turboexpander type, which use non-contact gas bearings, over the Stirling cycle mechanical cryocooler are potentially vibration free performance and greater reliability and lifetime. A disadvantage of the gas bearings is the need to run warm, which causes a large heat leak between the warm bearing zone and the cold expansion turbine, resulting in inefficient operation at low temperatures.

It cannot be said that any experiment so far carried out distinguishes unambiguously between the models but the case for plane decoupling appears strongest. Whatever the mechanism there is clearly important work to be done in this area to improve performance. Conclusions and Future Prospects Most of the superconducting properties of high Tc superconductors are much better than those of conventional ones. The large energy gap means that both analogue and digital systems should work ten times faster than with Niobium technology.
